The Art of the Mandala: Woven Stories & Circles

Woven in cotton and rich with colour, tapestries have long been both practical and decorative textiles. Used as bedspreads, table covers, wall décor, room dividers, and more, they bring art and storytelling into everyday spaces. Across cultures, textile traditions have been passed down through generations, with techniques ranging from hand painting and batik to embroidery, tie-dye, and modern screen printing.

“Art for your walls. Stories woven into every thread.”

Among the many designs found on tapestries, the mandala holds a special place. The word mandala comes from Sanskrit and means “circle.” Its circular form is often associated with unity, wholeness, continuity, and the ever-changing nature of the cosmos. Found throughout spiritual and artistic traditions, mandalas have also become a popular tool for meditation, reflection, and creating a sense of calm.

“A circle without beginning or end.”

A mandala is often built from simple geometric shapes arranged around a central point called the Bindu. In some traditions, the Bindu represents the starting point, or the centre of one's being. As the design expands outward, layer by layer, the growing circle can be seen as a reflection of life's complexity, the passage of time, and the cyclical patterns of nature and existence.

“Begin at the centre. Let the journey unfold.”

Today, mandalas can be found far beyond their traditional settings—in artwork, textiles, meditation spaces, homes, and creative practices around the world. Their intricate patterns invite us to pause and look more closely, making them as much a visual experience as a symbolic one.

“A moment of stillness, woven into colour and form.”

At Oriental Enterprises, we offer a diverse collection of mandala tapestries, available both online and in our Montreal store.
